The Volkswagen Polo, since its India launch, has seen four different engines – the 1.2-litre three-pot petrol and diesel, the 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol (now discontinued), and the turbocharged 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol in the GT TSi. Today, VW’s introduced the fifth mill in the form of the 1.6-litre diesel engine in the GT TDI.

This is the same engine as the one seen on the Vento, a 1,598cc four-pot diesel which makes 103bhp and 250Nm of torque – which, rather interestingly, is only 4bhp off the Mercedes A-Class diesel’s output, while matching it on the torque front. There’s some food for thought, right there, eh TopGearheads?

Unlike the TSi-powered GT’s seven-speed DSG auto, the GT TDI gets a five-speed manual ‘box.

Available as a single fully-loaded variant, the GT TDI’s equipment list reads pretty much the same as that of the GT TSi – 15-inch ‘Estrada’ alloys, GT badging, ‘Milan’ fabric upholstery, auto climate control, double-DIN stereo with aux-in, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, steering-mounted controls, aluminium-finished pedals and rear parking sensors are standard.

This is now the most expensive Polo in the line-up, priced at Rs 8.08 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Would you have a sporty Polo diesel over a sporty Polo petrol?
